Great for my 10 yr. old builderSep 06, 2010

My 10 year old son loves to do building projects. He has moved on a bit from Lego and is wanting to try different projects. He did this with his uncle. It took them about 7 hours total. I don't think he could have done it on his own. The directions were not great, but not so difficult that they became frustrated. They were very happy working together on this project. My son is thrilled by the result. The boat is quite sturdy. They used some glue in places, particularly on the knots for the sails. My son now wants to buy more from this company. I recommend it. It is great summertime project if a grown-up has time to help.

Fun to assemble, but horrible directionsJan 03, 2008

The ship is fun to put together and looks nice when complete, but expect to spend plenty of time looking at tiny numbers because the instructions are very, very poor.
The instructions consist of nothing more than a single page with the joints on each piece numbered. In theory, just match up the numbers and everything fits together except that duh, plenty of pieces need to be put together in a certain sequence, requiring some trial and error assembly. The pieces themselves are not numbered at all and there are utterly no direction for any of the lines (ropes). On top of that, the only picture of the assembled ship is the one on the front of the box where the sails obscure all of the rigging. I suppose this IS supposed to be a puzzle instead of a model but for 9yr olds? My a**. :)
This is GREAT! Better than it looks!Mar 26, 2012

I like puzzles and models. This is both. This ship came out looking far better than I expected. I thought it would look goofy and unrealistic, but it is actually really accurate, detailed, and realistic for a wooden model of this type. It has all the essential features of a real square rigger ship. It really sparks your imagination. I love it. It's so much fun. I actually had FUN putting this together. Overall, the assembly is pretty easy and fast, but sometimes you get stuck for a moment. I have a very high IQ so it wasn't too hard for me. Almost all the parts fit together perfectly, but a few parts require trimming or sanding. I bought another wooden ship puzzle like this one before from another company, but this one is far better. I wish this company would make more model ships, because I love ships. It would be cool if they made a model crab fishing boat, or a tug boat, or a bigger and more elaborate square rigger. This model makes me want to build a serious, traditional wooden model ship. I think if you wanted to, you could paint it and add more details for more realism. I highly recommend this ship.

Great if your kid has his Masters in EngineeringJul 26, 2011
By StaceyB WOW, what a load of mess this is claiming to be for KIDS 9+. The directions are absolutely terrible. There are no numbers on the actual pieces so you have to mull over 5 different diagrams filled with teeny tiny numbers to find the pieces you need. They cheaped out massively on the instructions, not even explaining the correct positions certain pieces need to be in. It ends up being trial and error and if you are not mechanically inclined, like myself (a 33 year old WITH a college degree), it becomes a project of stress. A couple of the pieces split apart when I was trying to put them in. I was not rough with them. They are just very thin pieces. Before I felt like steam was going to come out of my ears I stopped the project and tossed it in the trash. My daughter was unable to do ANY part of this project on her own. I am going to research some other sets that seem more truly age appropriate and have been rated higher on quality. This is a terrible kit for a child. It's a terrible kit for an adult. I am so tired of buying products that look great but end up being cheap pieces of junk with inadequate instructions.
